Jenisia Borna, a private television anchor in Bangladesh has been fired after an off-air conversation, in which she used derogatory language to refer to two activists, was accidentally broadcast live.
The incident occurred during a live news covering a tragic case of child passed away after gan-rapped. However, a behind-the-scenes discussion between newsroom staff was aired due to a technical glitch. Anchor Jenisia Borna making an unfiltered remark about two individuals.
What Happened?
During the live broadcast, a newsroom staff member asked whether Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam had traveled to Magura for Achia’s funeral. News Editor and presenter Jenisia Barna made an inappropriate remark, saying, “Ei shuyorgula gelei ki, na gelei ki” (roughly translating to “What difference does it make if these pigs go or not?”).
The comment immediately sparked outrage on social media after a clip of the incident went viral. After that, many criticized the anchor for her choice of words, particularly because the individuals in question, Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam, are well-known figures. Abdullah is a senior leader of the National Citizens’ Party and a key voice in the anti-discrimination student movement.
Jenisia Barna Lost Her Job
Ekhon TV management acted quickly after the incident went viral. Reports suggest that CEO Tushar Abdullah dismissed Barna from her position after hours of the footage surfacing. The network has not yet released an official statement on the matter.
